Ian Chappell’s expertise is to belittle Steve Waugh: according to him, Ponting’s a better captain than Waugh. Where did that come from, sir?
Earlier Chappell claimed Mark Taylor was a better captain than Steve Waugh. Tomorrow when Michael Clarke is captain, he’ll tell us Clarke’s a better captain than Waugh.
At some point, it’s possible he called brother, Greg a better coach than Waugh. If he knew me, he’d call me a better Indian than Waugh.
Anyway, Chappell’s come to Ponting’s defence, and puts the blame squarely on the Aussie selectors. Here’s what he said -
“If Ponting clamoured for an all-seam attack at The Oval the selectors should have been strong enough and wise enough to advise otherwise.”
Appears the Aussies have learnt little from the series defeats to India, South Africa and now England. Voices like Chappell’s are defiant in their defence for Ponting as skipper.
Sure, retain Ponting as captain. You lost it a long time back. Now here’s to losing it many more times.

I would like to see Punter still retained as a captain. He was and IS a great leader neverthless. He may have failed but he is sure to be back.
And is Clarke really ready??
Shane Warne – The best bowler Australia has ever produced has opened up his mind to the media. He exposed his discontent regarding umpires. According to the ace spinner barring a few exceptions like Simon Tauter and ASAP Rauf other umpires went awry in terms of performance .Expressing disappointment that the standard of umpiring has deteriorated to the worst extent in the past twenty years of time he opined that though umpiring was a hard job, the performances of the umpires in the Ashes series had been consistently so ordinary. As far as Warne is concerned umpire Billy Bowden whom he expected to deliver correct judgments was also not consistent in performing his duty.
The spinner repents that there are too many instances of such bad judgments, which is increasingly becoming a cause of concern. He directly made a mention of names of umpires Daryl Harper and Billy Bowden, accusing them to be adamant in not confessing their wrong judgments. He also tried to strengthen his claim by mentioning that several players were not having a good opinion about those umpires in their minds. Warne insisted that the umpires should maintain a friendly attitude towards the players by shedding their high-handed attitude Warne also expressed his view repetitively that fifty over match should be withdrawn once for all as if such a change is brought about it would enable the players to spend more time with their families and relieve them from exhaustion.
Ricky Ponting like player are the born with capabilties of high class captainship. They cannot be weighed on the basis of particular series.
I second Ian. It is hard to find an Aussie captain that currently gives so much of comic relief to the world.
i too recommend him to be retained...for why to deprive rest if world the sadistic when ponting lead team loses...
i bet when england won the ashes not only england's fan would have jumped out of their seats...
no captain can take his team to 'this' level...
Chris, I don't know about Clarke, but Ponting is ready to go.
As in Dada's case, each captain has a shelf life, beyond which it will hamper both game and mind. Ponting still has the game.
Vijayanand, ASAP Rauf, ha!
Vikas, they haven't weighed him on the basis of any of his 3 recent lost test series. They weigh him on his batting, isn't that a basic error of judgement?
scorpi, tragic comic now
SP, here's to underground cricket with him
